Dating back to the 1770s, The Store at Five Corners was one of the oldest continually-operating businesses in the United States — as a tavern, meeting house, inn, stagecoach stop, post office, general store and café — until a prior owner closed the doors in 2020. The building was then placed at serious risk of neglect and demolition.
In 2021, a local community group conducted a survey and discovered widespread and passionate support for purchasing the building to ensure that this beloved local gathering spot would not be lost. A fundraising effort was initiated, to which over 300 community members generously contributed — raising sufficient funds in less than 60 days to purchase and restore the property.
Locals also formed a new 501(c)(3) organization, The Store at Five Corners Stewardship Association (SAFCSA), committed to purchasing, reviving, and maintaining the Store for future generations to enjoy.
On January 27, 2022, SAFCSA purchased The Store for $400,000. The Association then set to work on several high-priority projects to restore and preserve this historic building.

Maintaining a 250-year-old building is a never-ending labor of love. SAFCSA is deeply grateful for the community's ongoing support of this town treasure.
Ongoing work is made possible thanks to community donations and grants from the Town of Williamstown Community Preservation Act Fund.
